External links

Note: Some of the data shown on this page has been partially modified for display purposes and should not be considered accurate information.

When data is presented in eGenome, either as an individual record or as a summary table, various clickable links are provided to allow the user to navigate to related information about an element. Many of these links are internal; in other words, they lead to information that is stored in the eGenome database CompDB. In addition, links to selected external databases are also provided. These databases include the GenBank/EMBL/DDBJ sequence repository, the Radiation Hybrid Database (RHdb), and the UniGene EST sequence clustering project (see complete list below). In most cases, clicking on the link leads to data that is directly related to specific information about the element of interest. For example, clicking on a sequence accession number listed for a particular marker leads a user to a page containing the DNA sequence from which the marker was derived. This is illustrated in the example below:

In the example shown above, the links are designated by underlined text. Clicking on the GenBank accession number AL359815 leads the user to the sequence record for this marker, which is actually stored at the GenBank sequence database. Other links to specific data shown in this example include those to UCSC and the NCBI Clone Registry.

Certain external links require some user input before they can provide the proper link. This includes the sequence tools subsection of the example shown above. Both the BLAST and View sequence tools require the user to select one or more parameters from pop-up windows. After the desired parameters are set, the link to the external tool is completed by clicking the GO button (more info).

Another way that external links to specific data are provided are with buttons. Many of these can be found in the set of buttons at the bottom of each individual record, such as buttons for querying the GeneCards transcribed element database, the OMIM disease gene database, and the BioHunt molecular biology-specific search engine. Clicking on a button initiates the requisite search at the external site and returns the results to your browser.

External links that provide specific information about an element are included whenever possible. In some cases, there is no corresponding web page containing information about a specific element. For these situations, we provide generic external links that point to the home page or project introduction page of the relevant Genome Center or database. Also, many of the external links for individual element names will not return any meaningful information. If this occurs, it is most likely due either to changes in data for that record in the external database, or that the element being searched is not present in the external database. While we do our best to keep the global external searches up-to-date, it is currently impossible to check the accuracy of all of the millions of ID links we are providing. If you encounter problems with an external link, we'd greatly appreciate hearing about it.
